Crystal Castles Debut New Material at Irving Plaza [Review + Video]
Prior to last night’s show I was describing Crystal Castles‘ live performance to my co-worker as aggressive, chaotic and loud. Upon arrival to the show, the crowd seemed fine enough but as Pictureplane (who got harshly heckled) finished his set the crowd expectedly squeezed forward anxiously. Crystal Castles hadn’t even started yet and a drugged-out girl had to be thrown over the shoulder of security and taken out, her friends of course watched her get dragged away and got into the mob mindset (Lesson: just say no to drugs!)
We were given advance notice that the band did not want any photography (press photo access VERY limited) so I approached this review and photo project as a raging barricade-holding member of the mosh pit with a concealed crappy point and shoot camera. Good pictures, bad pictures…who cares, the goal was to have a good time, dance my ass off, hold Alice Glass up in her incessant crowd surfing and most importantly try to stay conscious in the thick of it all. Mission accomplished!
I was fortunate enough to have 2 advance spins of the new album (see: Crystal Castles Album Details and Twitter Review) on Tuesday night which gave me a nice familiarity with the songs — which sound even better live! My assessment of the live show remains summarized as aggressive, chaotic and loud, but after last night I’d like to add intense. Check out the video below I took of Yes No (during which I found myself fighting for strength to hold my arms up) it will truly give you all the insight you need. Don’t miss Crystal Castles headlining slots for the HARD Summer Fest, more info HERE.
