Northside Festival: MEN + Creep at The Knitting Factory

Last Friday night the Lauren Flax & Lauren Dillard project Creep made their debut at The Knitting Factory in support JD Samson‘s project MEN. Both Laurens performed cloaked in black and stood behind laptops while video montages projected onto the screen behind them.  The set opened with a song featuring Romy from The Xx’s vocals from the song Shelter, she later made another appearance on one of the duos tracks and visually onscreen. Creep was followed by No Bra whom Q magazine described as “Doleful pornographic poetry.”

At about 11pm, JD Samson, Michael O’Neill and Ginger Brooks Takahashi took the stage to a sold out crowd to play one of the most rousing, emotional yet feel-good performances I’ve seen all year long. MEN’s music covers some heavy sociopolitical ground shedding light on topics never discussed in music. The tongue-in-cheek lyrical content and onstage delivery of Credit Card Babies and Simultaneously were both important highlights of the night, and the entire Northside Festival! MEN’s appearance at Northside was definitely an important one and an extremely welcomed segue on the eve of New York City’s Gay Pride festivities. Stay up to date with MEN on Facebook and be sure to catch them on tour.
