2 weeks ago I shared Kate Nash’s I Just Love You More. This week Nash  shared the title of her album as  My Best Friend Is You with a release date of 4/20! Even more exciting is the flight-attendant themed video clip for the first single from the album titled Doo Wah Do.

A few months back we saw Brooklyn’s ZAZA play a very short but awesome supporting set for Echo and the Bunnymen at Mercury Lounge. And we took note. This week ZAZA shared the music video for Always On before heading out to Austin, check it out HERE.

Wanda Lavonne Jackson was born in Oklahoma on October 20th, 1937 and was discovered by Hank Thompson in 1954. Initially she was shut out of Capitol Records that year after being told that “Girls don’t sell records,” and instead signed with Decca Records. ^[1]

Right out of high school, Jackson began touring with the likes of Elvis Presley (whom she also briefly dated) and had her first top 40 hit with Let’s Have A Party in 1959.  As the popularity of Rockabilly declined in the mid-60’s, Jackson made the transition to country music and even syndicated television.

To the dismay of Capitol Records (who signed her in 1956), Jackson began recording gospel music in the 70’s which ultimately lead to the end of her recording contract. In 2003, Wanda’s career picked up again with the release of her first studio album since the 80’s called Heart Trouble, which  included collaborations with The Cramps and Elvis Costello.

Jackson was nominated twice for induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, first in 2005 and then in 2008 leading to induction in April 2009 as an Early Influence. Later in 2009, The White Stripes/The Raconteurs/Dead Weather’s Jack White announced that he would be producing 72 year old Wanda Jackson’s upcoming album in Nashville, stating that “It’s a wild record.”

This brings us to today. The first song from the wild record to have surfaced is Jackson’s cover of Amy Winehouse’s You Know I’m No Good which I have for you below. As of now there is no official information on the full-length but rumor has it that Jackson will be hitting the stages of SXSW next week. It’s amazing how Wanda has managed to stay relevant without effort, aspiring musicians should definitely take note.

Fans lined up around the block, knowing very little about what was actually going to take place. Basically the performance consisted of cloaked Animal Collective band members Geologist, Deakin and Avey Tare wearing rabbit-like masks. The masked figures moved and turned very very slowly behind orbs in an icy setting onto which visuals were projected to the sound of ambient-like noises and clangs. It was a pretty cool experience which you could only really appreciate by walking through the different levels to observe from different angles.

Fans lingered for hours hoping for something, anything to happen: the band to perform a set of their music or something crazy and unexpected. Kids dressed in glitter, feathers and face paint left the museum to walk the streets of Manhattan in dismay.

I’ve seen AnCo live before and to be honest I can only tolerate their set for a certain amount of time, however this installation was maybe too easy to digest. Anyhow it was cool for what it was, I guess.  I will never really “get” their cult-like appeal…or maybe I just need to take more drugs?

I won tickets off of Courtney’s website in 2007 for her ultra-rare performance at Hiro Ballroom and though it was at the peak of her legal woes and emaciation, the show was undeniably captivating. I’ve always rooted for Love so it’s with great pleasure that I can say that it seems as though Courtney’s finally ready to share her music via Hole.

I’m looking forward to the new album, and upcoming gigs at SXSW and the JUST ANNOUNCED Terminal 5 show in New York which will surely be the season’s hottest ticket! Once again I’m rooting for Love and hoping she doesn’t fuck this up and that people will at least hear her out!
