In concluding the final night of their 3 sold out NYC gigs, CSS and Sleigh Bells went hard Sunday night at Bowery Ballroom. Thursday night‘s show at Webster Hall was solid but the Bowery gig Sunday night seemed much more about connecting with the audience, and for Sleigh Bells the city in which they formed. The sentiment was felt through the throbbing strobe lights, pounding soundwaves and consistent interaction with fans who spilled beer and threw their arms up in unison.

CSS nabbed the alternating headlining slot that night and delivered one of the best shows I’ve seen all year! Art Bitch kicked off the set with frontwoman/badass Lovefoxxx dressed to kill in a traditional matador traje de luces outfit. As the band powered through the 13 song set, Lovefoxxx slithered out of layers of clothing to reveal an outfit more outrageous and awesome than the last until reappearing in a prom dress and black negligee for the encore. They have successfully outdone last performance!

CSS’s setlist included a few new songs from their upcoming August 29th release, La Liberacíon, which were extremely fun and dancey. I urge those who panned the band’s 2008 second album Donkey to give it another spin after experiencing the frenzied dance party prompted by live versions of Move and Let’s Reggae All Night. The band shared plans to play New York again in October in support of their third album. And now I will anxiously wait! Check out videos and pictures from both sets below.

Last night New York City welcomed the long awaited return of St. Albans’ Friendly Fires. The show marked the band’s very first gig of 2011 in which they shared songs from their upcoming album Pala (release date TBA) for the very first time! Three years ago I saw the nearly unknown Friendly Fires for the first time at Bowery Ballroom during CMJ and have closely followed their every move leading up to last night’s brilliant show at the same venue.

This tour serves as a vehicle to test out the new material, which thankfully keeps the same dancey and emotional spirit of their first record but takes the sound into even more interesting territory. New song titles include Blue Cassette (video below), True Love, Running Away, Chimes, Hurting, Pull Me Back to Earth and Show Me Lights. Friendly Fires will return to play Webster Hall on May 25th, which by then I will be able to sing along to the new tracks! Do not miss out!

After a fantastic opening set from New York’s The Hundred in the Hands (one of my favorite live acts of 2010), my many overhearings at the venue clued me in that they’ve made many new fans. Unfortunately THIH will not join the Fires for the remainder of their tour but have announced a European tour kicking off in London on February 25th, full dates here.

The Big Pink at Bowery Ballroom 12.3.09

The Big Pink‘s debut album A Brief History of Love was fittingly released this past September to critical acclaim and heavy rotation on many of my playlists. Before diving into my review of the show, I’d like to share a brief history of the band:

The Big Pink is comprised of Robbie Furze (lead) and Milo Cordell who began making music together in 2007. Both have behind the scenes experience running the record label Hate Channel, in addition to Cordell releasing music under his own well-established label Merok Records (home to Klaxons, Crystal Castles, The Teenagers, Esser, Titus Andronicus, etc.)

We missed the band’s New York debut last June but made sure to be front and center for the first of the two New York stops on their current North American tour at Bowery Ballroom last Thursday night. California’s Crystal Antlers added an extra psychedelic garage twist to the night, with their supporting set at 10PM.

Shortly after Crystal Antlers left the stage, preparations were made with stage hands carrying fog juice, strobe lights and spraying aerosol cans before the lights dimmed at 11PM. The 9-song set kicked off amid a foggy strobe-light attack with Too Young to Love and hit it’s high notes mid-set with Velvet and Crystal Visions before closing with an epic drum smashing sing-a-long for Dominos.

Unlike what was going on in the audience, The Big Pink’s live set was a refreshing and straight-forward performance with very little banter. We left Bowery Ballroom very pleased with the live translation and stage presence from the duo and their supporting band members. The set could have been a bit longer with possibly a few covers (namely Beyonce’s Sweet Dreams- see below) but maybe next time! The band has just wrapped their US tour and are heading back to the UK, but keep an eye out for future tour dates on their MySpace…you won’t wanna miss them!

More pictures from the show can be seen HERE.
> Have you had any time to do anything in New York?
JP: Not yet no. I feel like I’ve done my fair share of fun stuff as I’ve been here quite a lot in the past few years. I love it. I normally feel like I’m somewhere I shouldn’t be when traveling to other cities, whereas I don’t have that there. It feels quite normal.

> Is that because it’s a bit like London?
JP: Yeah and I’ve got friends here, real friends. You just ring them and it’s completely comfortable. Whereas if you’re in Tokyo or wherever, you don’t feel that same kind of ease. I always have an amazing time here.

‘That style of music seemed the most natural to bring in at this point in my life.’

> I was listening to an interview you did with Jo Whiley after visiting New York and she asked you what the top 3 things to do in New York were and you mentioned Crif Dogs…
JP: Yeah I love that place.

> Anything else to add to that list? Like “Jack’s Guide to New York.”
JP: Oh God I’m the worst person to ask. It’s always based around food. I really like that place Freemans Alley, they do amazing artichoke dip which I’m really into. I just really like the large drinks you get, you seem to pour out more spirit than we get back home. In England they sit there for hours making sure it’s exactly the amount, and it’s the most frustrating thing to watch! They almost wipe off the top if there’s too much. They’d rather you not have more, but in America I love the heavy handed drink pouring.

> That’s also dependant on your tipping..
JP: (Laughs) Yeah exactly it’s very true!

Jack Peñate at Bruar Falls, 6.3.09

> With your second album its a very drastic difference — I know you’ve covered that in a million interviews — but what we’re interested finding out is why you chose this specific direction of afro-pop Caribbean beats, all this lush sound going around…
JP: First of all, growing up all of these styles of music were very familiar to me. I went to see Dr. John when I was 9 with my mum, my father was obsessed with Afro-beat, and my brother loved reggae so I grew up listening to Buju Banton, Sizzla, Red Rat and all these guys. I loved all of it but for some reason I didn’t feel like I could ever be obvious with loving that in my own music, and then something kind of clicked during the first record and I thought “If you love something surely you can bring it into your own music.” That style of music seemed the most natural to bring in at this point in my life.

There’s lots of stuff I’d like to bring in later on but at this point I wanted that. I didn’t want to come back with a serious second record. I wanted it to carry on that kind of joyous feeling from the first record but contextualize it in music that I loved and felt maybe hadn’t been explored in a lot of pop, and try to combine it with how I write songs. It felt kind of natural for some reason.

> You said you wanted to keep the second record joyous but when it comes to subject matter there is some serious lyrical content. We were talking to (even though your music is very different) a band like White Lies who say that their songs are about macabre themes but it’s still essentially pop music –
JP: I do it in a sort of tongue in cheek way though…

> Where does your perspective on this come from?
JP: I suppose that mainly I still have this teenage way of thinking about life and how it’s going to end. It’s one of those things that kind of carries on and is constant in my head, I don’t know if that’s a good or bad thing. A song like Let’s All Die actually came about from someone else’s influence. I went on a road trip across America when I was 19 with my bassist Joel, and we saw a funeral procession in New Orleans.

It took me back in quite a shock actually because death is a very different thing in Britain (and most of America) but to see a little pocket of where it was this incredible amazing celebration…I was almost jealous as I’d want that. Music and color, it’s a great way to send someone away and say goodbye instead of quietly sobbing in all black the rain in Bexley Heath, South London. It’s what I grew up with - heartbreaking funerals that didn’t have that sense of joy which life does have. I also like the idea of 14 year old kids in England singing along to the words, I think it’s kind of funny and in some way sort of punk rock.

‘I still have this teenage way of thinking about life and how it’s going to end. It’s one of those things that kind of carries on and is constant in my head’

> Was that the reception you’ve gotten at festivals? We heard that your set at Reading was huge!
JP: Oh my god it was insane. I wasn’t sure how these gigs would go because of the new record, but it was crazier than any gig we’ve ever done. There were like 15,000 people moshing, you know it’s going to be good when the crowd starts doing the thing where they sway and fall over and screaming. As soon I hit the note the thing went (crash sound.)

Jack Peñate at Mercury Lounge, 9.15.09

> How was it to go from those kind of shows to playing here at Mercury Lounge?
JP: Yeah that was only 2 shows ago! It is definitely a learning curve, it makes you re-evaluate everything and realize there is so much work to do. I’m gonna have to be really strong and make sure I’ve got a huge backbone and just be like (we played last night it was a lovely show but it’s a pretty small crowd) ” Fuck it, this is how it is and you can’t expect much more.” I think it’s a positive and it kind of knocks you in a way.

> It’s good so you don’t take anything for granted.
JP: Yeah I don’t want to be knocked for too long though (all laugh.)

> Are you working on new material?
JP: Yeah, I’ve been in the studio any day off at the moment really. Went in the studio with The Streets the other day which was cool, we didn’t finish it though because we only had 6 hours because of our schedules. I’ve been writing on tour and just looking forward to getting back to do more. I want new music out in the next few months, hopefully an EP soon for people to hear.

> Back to the live show, what was the craziest experience you’ve had? I read a bit about how fans went mad during Torn on the Platform…
JP: We played in a place called Hull in Northern England, they call it “hell hole.” I love it but it’s real, really fucking intense. We played this place which is a pretty famous bar, if you saw this place…I mean this room (boiler room of Mercury Lounge) is beautiful in comparison and it’s not that much bigger. The people who have played there Radiohead, Coldplay, u2, it’s one of those institution places. They oversold it by about 200 kids, so there were 500 kids in space for 300 IF that. The sound man is severely disabled, it was all sort of a head fuck AND in the middle of a whole estate, the whole vibe is fucking mad.

All the kids got onstage for pretty much the whole gig. I just bought a new guitar and I remember looking over and saying “Where the fuck is my guitar!?” My tour manager had to chase after this kid, they stole everything. Kids were trying to undo the drums but it was all ’cause of love, very much like mementos. I can’t really get annoyed about that, in fact it was kind of funny. My drummer was having to smack kids hands with the drum sticks while he was playing and kids were trying to take my guitar. It was fun, that was a good one.

‘I wanted it to carry on that kind of joyous feeling from the first record but contextualize it in music that I loved and felt maybe hadn’t been explored in a lot of pop, and try to combine it with how I write songs.’

> Over here they just go for the set list or a guitar pick! You’re based in London — is there music community you have? I know you and the Maccabees are friends.
JP: Yeah definitely! I live in a home that’s kind of by the record label. I rent a room and below is a record label called Merock. There’s lots of bands around. It’s a good thing but I kind of want to break away, kind of like the idea of LA because it’s kind of ridiculous. I love New York but it would be too easy but it’s quite close to England. I like the idea that if I’m going to move, it’ll be 12 hours from home. There’s definitely a great musical community in London but sometimes it can also be a fucking nightmare. You don’t want to talk about “Did you hear the new (this) single…” and there’s a lot of that, which is what those scenes do. It gets a bit intense, I kind of want to opt out.

> You jokingly mentioned dating one of the girls from New Young Pony Club in a previous interview.
JP: (Fumbles his words) My girlfriend’s here, no. Someone wrote a bit in a magazine and then everyone was saying it. I met her once.

> Not to put you on the spot but I read that she came up to you in a festival and said “You’re my boyfriend.”
JP: Yeah she did, we definitely don’t know each other…

> Oh was it off of the tabloid thing?

JP: Yeah it was a joke, it’s odd to be dating someone you don’t know…

> So you guys are broken up I can assume? (All laugh)
JP: Horribly painful, horribly painful. It’s like a Bon Iver kind of record, crying in my teacup.

Florence + The Machine made their NYC debut at Fader’s CMJ party at the ACE Hotel on Saturday October 24, and we were front and center for the acoustic masterpiece! Last Monday we got a second dose of Florence at Bowery Ballroom, an enchanting set complete with a full band, bright lights and a gorgeous set design.

The show began at 9 PM when Tennessee’s Holly Miranda took the stage to play a melodic 45 minute set. Halfway through the set she was joined with members of Nada Surf before bowing out for the lady of the night, Ms. Florence Welch.

Nothing gets more intimate than being almost eye level with a performer during an acoustic set and serenading each other (yup it happened at Fader), but even during a bigger stage production Florence is a confiding storyteller confessing all of her secrets through her voice. The audience was entranced and anxious for Florence to hit the next note and bash her fire-red mane around while doing so.

I was so involved with the show that after the generous 12 songs, I turned to the person next to me and asked if it was REALLY encore time. Time really stands still when Florence is in the spotlight.

The set wrapped with You’ve Got The Love and Rabbit Heart (Raise it Up), the ultimate heartfelt combo that moved the entire venue to a unified and uplifted place. Yet another absolutely stellar and flawless performance.

Ebony Bones at Bowery Ballroom, 7.29.09

On Wednesday night Ebony Bones brought the Bones of My Bones Tour to New York’s Bowery Ballroom in support of the upcoming release of her debut LP. She brought along local Brooklyn bands Ninjasonik and The Drums along for a night oozing of highly animated energy!

We’ve had The Drums eclectic tunes on rotation here so we were really looking forward to seeing the translation from MP3 to stage. The Drums consist of former Elkland singer Jonathan Pierce and Jacob Graham of Flashlight Party, as well as a full band and back-up singers that accompany their live set.

The Drums at Bowery Ballroom, 7.20.09

The Drums formed with the intent to “Make pure pop songs okay again,” and in my opinion they are on their way to accomplish this goal. I thoroughly enjoyed their live set that kept the excitement, passion and graciousness on a high scale. Everyone onstage looked like they were having a great time, much like ourselves.

Ebony Bones took the stage after 11PM, making quite the entrance following her highly-stylized stage companions (see pictures below.) The crowd Ms. Bones pulled it baffled me. Ranging from Brits, pierced boys kissing each other, and people who seemed to be up past their bedtime. Ebony Bones’ overall message of creating a sense of unity was successful which was best noted in the audience’s synchronized dance routine.

Ebony Bones’ debut Bone of My Bones was released in the UK on June 30th and will see a US release date soon. The Drums’ Summertime EP will be released on September 15th with a gig at Mercury Lounge following the release on September 22nd.

Ebony is back to promote the release of her eclectic collective of celebratory bangers, Bone of My Bones.

In case you forgot, last summer she made a splash debut at the concert for current US President Barack Obama at McCarren Park Pool (RIP) and left tongues wagging in anticipation for the return of the carnival! The wait is over next week when Ebony Bones headlines Bowery Ballroom on July 29th with my current obsession The Drums supporting the gig!

Bowery has been dry in recent months so I’m excited to finally make my return with this MUST line-up! As always, see you in the mosh pit.

Passion Pit at Bowery Ballroom, 6.19.09

We’ve been championing Passion Pit for going on a year now and it was an truly impressive sight to see how far this band has come from playing to modest crowds at Pianos last summer and an opening slot for French Kicks at Bowery Ballroom to booking two high profile, sold-out, headlining shows at Bowery in such a short time. This time the Massachusetts ambassadors of raucous indie-dance weren’t hawking their wares in the form of a 6 song EP, but performing tracks from a recently released full-length album that appeared to have won over individuals of all ages and scenes who couldn’t help get swept up in the exuberant energy of Passion Pit’s music.

You’d guess by their geek chic appearance that Michael Angelakos and company would be reluctant purveyors of hot beats and dancefloor bangers, but to watch Passion Pit live is to see a band fully animated with a confidence in the quality of their tunes and a conviction to deliver them with precision and ardor. The crowd immediately turned into a sweaty mob and kept up the pace throughout the 45 minute set. Highlights included I’ve Got Your Number, Sleepyhead, Make Light and epic set closer, The Reeling.

Brooklyn based four-piece, Body Language, played a formidable and winning opening set, showcasing their original blend of soul, jazz, pop and electronica. Look out for our Artist to Watch interview feature with the band soon.

I had the pleasure of catching The Rakes‘ return to New York at Bowery Ballroom on Monday, and a supplemental experience speaking with Alan, Jamie, Lasse and Matthew the following day at their hotel in the glamorous Tribeca Grand.

After seeing lead singer Alan Donohoe’s rather entertaining and hilarious antics the night before, I was unsure whether he’d be replying to my questions in song (it only happened once.) Anyway, without further ado here is my very interesting, ecstatic and fun interview with The Rakes.

Make sure you pick up Klang (unfortunately not available in the US yet), and make sure to catch them at a city near you, you’ll thank me later!

> Hi guys, so we’re here in the lounge of Tribeca Grand. You played Bowery Ballroom last night, how did do you feel about that show?
Alan: It was fun. That’s the third time we’ve played Bowery. The crowd is a bit like LA, cool contained guys and girls. It was definitely great to get some moshing though!

> Have you seen your audience change a bit?
Alan: I can’t remember the last show but by all other accounts, yeah. Last night was a bit of a “bomb stormer!”
Jamie: Tonight should be good as well as it’s a tiny venue. Apparently the stage is only [this] big.
Alan: It’s in the phone box.

> I was here for your DJ set at Tribeca Grand. What songs are a must when you’re DJ-ing?
Lasse: Yeah that was great, I really enjoyed that actually. I can’t remember what I played…
Alan: Don’t Stop Me Now by Queen always goes down very well.
Lasse: I played a remix of The Whitest Boy Alive by a guy named Fred Falke, that’s quite good. And a remix that Matthew told me about which is by Dan Lissvik from Studio, it’s a song by Fever Ray which is the side project of the girl from The Knife.

> Why did you guys decide to record the latest album, Klang in Berlin?
Alan: (sings and laughs to himself “Um…. because…. it’s…. nice.”) No, the first song we wrote for the album was 1989, which is sort of about Berlin. That sort of got us thinking about recording in Berlin; we wanted to get out England…
Lasse and Alan: Shake things up a bit….
Alan: Yeah and then we went out and did this recon trip and found this studio that was really interesting that we eventually went over to record in.
Lasse: Our producer’s from New York and he sort of suggested that we just record in New York, he’s got a studio just down the road. We thought that’d be cool but we also felt that it would be good to get out of our comfort zone and him get out of his too. Go out as a gang somewhere and go record, it would be exciting and might bring something to the record. So Chris heard of this band called Liars who used the studio in Berlin and I went to check it out. It’s a really cool and interesting place, it’s an old Soviet radio station.

> Did any of that rub off onto the creative process?
Lasse: Sure I reckon. Lyrically slightly because a lot of the songs were written before we went in, they sort of changed in to the environment in which we were staying some of the times. And also just atmosphere-wise, a certain atmosphere in the old radio station: abandonment and isolation. When you play within the atmosphere something comes across in the music, something you can’t really put your finger on.

> You have a remix contest up right now…
Alan: Oh Yeah! That’s right, that’s good.
Lasse: Some are pretty good (laughs.)
Jamie: Some good ones, some bad ones.

> So since the last album, last tour what are some of the big changes you’ve seen in the industry?
Lasse: Well in the UK we used to have singles up until about 3 years ago, in America you don’t have singles…?

> We used to, I think it’s kind of a sad thing to see them gone…
Lasse: No well, nobody really does singles anymore at all in the UK and that’s kind of been a bit of a tradition you know.
Matthew: 7”..it’s all digital now.
Lasse: You know what, in this industry we sort of specialize in live I guess. Its kind of helped us in a funny sort of way because there’s a lot of markets that, for example last year when we weren’t promoting anything we tried going to a few new countries. We toured in Russia, Brazil, Bangkok, Singapore, Portugal, a lot of places we as a band wouldn’t traditionally go but are able to now because it’s available online. Actually there’s a shift to sell less records and to play to a more wide range of people.
Jamie: I think the change is more coming for the record labels rather than the bands, it’s really their thing that has to change – how to run a label I guess.

> Do you feel that you have to be more hands on? A lot of artists are taking control over…
Jamie: Yeah to some degree, like digitally. Online you have to be a bit more hands on and take things on yourself a bit, just get in contact with the fans. Now there’s like 810 different online applications MySpace, Facebook, Twitter. Just trying to keep everything up to date, we all do a bit of it.

> For the rest of the year, what are you looking forward to?
Jamie: Yeah everything, we’ve got a UK and Europe tour coming up now, about 10 days after we get back to London tomorrow. We’ve got a few days off, then we tour the UK and Europe for about 5-6 weeks. After that we’ve got festivals all summer and then we’re probably back in the states.

> Compare the London crowds to the New York crowds that attend your show.
Lasse: For us obviously we play to more people in London because we haven’t been there for 3 or 4 years. The first difference would be sheer numbers but apart from that…
Alan: I think it’s pretty similar. A few the trendy dudes hanging around like looking a bit cool at the bar and then those what we call the geezers or the jocks. We got a few of those last night.
Lasse: In England and America we get a lot of geezers, or jocks coming. I think it’s pretty cool.
Jamie: Then there’s those indie kids who come along. It’s pretty similar sorts of people. I think New York and London are pretty similar in that way.
Matthew: And quite a wide range of ages which is quite funny…

> Yeah I noticed that too…
Jamie: Yeah! Like a guy who came all the way from Philadelphia because we’ve never played there before. He was like “Yeah that’s it, I’m coming to the New York show.” He came last night, and he’s a bit of an older guy. I think it’s good to have a bit of a mixture because it means that you’re not just appealing to one certain crowd that will eventually grow out.
Lasse: I met 4 guys who [were] kind of jocks. They drove from Michigan for the gig. It’s a long drive.
Jamie: Rather than saying “ok these people are easily classifiable” but the fact is that it’s not just the scenesters. We have played shows in New York before, but perhaps everyone knew about us through Dior and that sort of thing because we did that thing with Dior. So it was a bit more of doing interviews with cool magazines and that sort of thing. It’s always good to go beyond that. You play these cool parties like here, but the Bowery is an interesting place, an interesting mix of people.

> I think that’s one of the best venues in Manhattan.
Jamie: Brilliant venue, we’ve played there about 3 times and they’re all been really good. Such a cool place. The atmosphere, the building itself.

> As the frontman to The Rakes, how important is crowd interaction to you?
Alan: How the crowd responds at a show is about 70-90% responsible for how good the show goes really because it’s kind of hard to get right into it personally. Some people just stand there with their arm crossed picking their nose. You kind of just feed off of them, it’s sort of a reciprocal dance off. If they see you all jumping around on stage, then the audience might be like “Well if they’re doing it!” Pretty much, if you’re having a good time up there, it’ll come across.

> Are there any recent books, film, or music that you’re currently excited about?
Alan: I’m looking forward to the Woody Allen film, it’s got Larry David. I saw in the newspaper that it was going to premiere at the Tribeca Film Festival.

> You’re all about Tribeca!
Alan: Yeah. As far as books, there’s a really good book called Midnight’s Children i just finished reading, it’s a bit of an old one. I just recently got back into literature again. I found that more exciting than the new stuff.

> Well that’s about all I have for you, thanks so much for speaking to me and good luck at tonight’s show at Union Pool!
