Kitty Party at Wreck Room DJ Setlist 5/5/11

The night started off a bit rocky with some equipment issues but turned out pretty swell with people dancing for a solid few hours. This was my first gay night DJ gig, however being that it was in a straight dive bar in Bushwick I had to gauge and feel the crowd out as I went along to make everyone “happy” (as DJ’s should.) I had a lot of interesting obscure and extended dance/new wave tracks I was hoping to play but instead had to sprinkle only a few those along between the booty shakers haha. Check out the songs played below, I know it’s a bit schizophrenic but I was nice and played a few requests for 2 of the birthday girls there that night. Looking forward to the next opportunity!

Just Announced: Peaches MC/DJ Set at Webster Hall

Bjork’s DJ Set Above The Auto Parts Store in Bushwick

I only found out about Björk‘s Rites Of Spring: A Benefit For Haiti DJ set in Bushwick last week, but before I even got the chance to pick up tickets at Record Grouch the tickets had already sold out. On Sunday I spent about 4 hours trying to find tickets online until an hour before showtime a fellow Bjork fan luckily responded to one of my pleas.

We arrived at about 9PM as Björk was hanging out behind the turntables gearing up to begin her set. The venue “Above The Auto Parts Store” was indescribably hot, but regardless fans packed in to get a glimpse of the one and only Björk. I was prepared to be at the venue for the long haul thinking Björk would be last, but she thankfully was second up on deck. DJ selections included a lot of obscure Asian and Middle Eastern house music, most notably including a cover of 2 Unlimited‘s No Limit, along with Major Lazer/Crooker‘s Jump Up!

Seeing Björk DJ tonight in my neighborhood was incredibly special and the icing on top of an already awesome weekend! If you were unable to partake in the charity event be sure to visit The American Red Cross to see how you can pitch in.

Little Boots DJ Set at Cabanas Maritime Hotel

After Little Boots‘ stellar gig at Highline Ballroom I stopped by her DJ Set at Cabanas at the Maritime Hotel just one block away. Victoria kicked off her set at about 1AM with Daft Punk’s Around the World.

The set ranged from Crystal Castles and Hercules and Love Affair and covered well known staples from the past few years. Boots definitely knows her way around the knobs even with constant interruptions from fans requesting to take pictures and hoping to chat. Check out my review of last night’s gig HERE.

Four Tet at le poisson rouge

On February 17th, Four Tet played a fantastic late night live DJ set at le poisson rouge with Nathan Fake. While Fake’s set entranced the crowd in a more obvious way, Four Tet’s set was heavy on technological instrumentation, minimal layered build-ups and concentrated mostly on the new release There is Love In You. It’s great to see a steady resurgence of dance culture in NYC’s youth as evidenced by the kids up front for this show (many of whom I saw and met at Electric Zoo last year.) Romy's (The Xx) DJ Set at Le Poisson Rouge

Last night The Xx’s female vocalist Romy Madley Croft spun records for her headlining 2AM DJ set at the West Village’s Le Poisson Rouge. Finger on the Pulse and VHS or Beta packed the dance floor with their pounding DJ sets before handing the decks off to Romy.

Quite different from what you’d expect to hear on an album by The Xx, Romy’s solo set consisted of hip hop and pop classics from the likes of Aaliyah, Adina Howard and beyond. It was a great way to kick off the first Saturday of 2010.

Basement Jaxx DJ Set at Santos Party House

New York seems to be going through a dance music revolution, rejoice! At the forefront we’ve recently seen DJ sets by Simian Mobile Disco, Justice, Calvin Harris and then last Saturday a euphoric DJ set delivered by none other than Basement Jaxx!

Fans packed into the sweaty venue for a glimpse of the duo as they spun classic tracks such as Break Away and brought guest vocalists onstage for tunes including Red Alert! It was one of the best nights I’ve had in awhile, so much that I only took 4 pictures from the pit of the dancefloor which can be seen HERE. Can’t wait to see them again (soon hopefully!)

Last Friday (pre-Halloween) we danced our asses off in costume at Webster Hall for Simian Mobile Disco’s epic live set. We saw SMD at Highline in April and again at Lollapalooza in August and every time it was as if James Ford and Jas Shaw were playing exclusively for my dance circle. Another flawless set at Webster, come back soon?
