La Roux made their highly anticipated return to the states on Monday night at Highline Ballroom with Brooklyn’s Body Language as the supporting act. Since interviewing Elly Jackson last month, we’ve been anticipating the North American tour, but along the road Elly’s been struggling through a viral infection that’s gone after her voice. The illness has forced cancellations of the Chicago and Boston tour dates, but luckily she was able to gather up enough strength to perform Monday in New York.

We also previously interviewed Body Language and regarded them as a band bound for big things this year, and under 5 months landed the supporting gig for Mercury Prize-nominated La Roux! They did a great job rousing the crowd with their funky dance tunes, which at times are pleasantly reminiscent of 90′s after hours house music in NY.

La Roux’s frontwoman Elly took the stage in a colorfully striped pantsuit after 10PM and kicked off the 35 minute set with Tigerlily. The shortened 9-song set included the UK bonus track Saviour but unfortunately left off Fascination. Luckily my favorite song Colourless Colour was smack in the middle of the dance set as my favorite moment of the night along with the crowd sing-a-long/assistance for the closer Bulletproof.

The states haven’t been kindest to La Roux with having to overcome sickness and extreme weather conditions (see All Points West Day 3: La Roux) but through it all we’ve seen 2 memorable sets from Elly & Co this year. Looking forward to the 2nd leg of the tour dubbed The Gold Tour in 2010 including rescheduled dates for Boston and Chicago. Get well Elly!

La Roux's Elly Jackson

We all know and love Elly Jackson for her incredible style, statements and of course the amazing contribution to the music industry this year via La Roux‘s solid self-titled debut album. La Roux has successfully created one of the year’s best pop albums in my opinion, so the opportunity to share a few words with Elly was exciting! In approaching this interview I wasn’t quite sure what was off limits with Elly who some have aptly nicknamed La Rude, so I just went for it with no filter. Check me and La Roux candidly going head to head, I’m pretty sure she won this battle of the wits.

> I recently read that you were excited to be see Kraftwerk live at Bestival. Having been on the other end playing gig after gig, is catching a gig a rare occurrence or do you still make time to see your favorite bands on tour?
EJ: It’s a very rare thing. We got amazing front row seats to see Depeche Mode in NYC recently which was wonderful. I’d never seen them before but that’s such a rarity. I don’t even get time to see anyone play at festivals let alone go to gigs.

> You’ve been very open about growing up feeling a bit of an outcast and in a sense have become a role model. Is that something you’re comfortable with?
EJ: If my music helps people in any way then that makes all the other bullshit worthwhile.

> Style-wise, is the Elly seen onstage with La Roux the same Elly we would see grocery shopping?
EJ: I never go grocery shopping.

> I read that you and Ben started off making acoustic music under the name Automan. The pairing has since evolved into La Roux. How do those two projects compare and why did you decide to make the switch?
EJ: Automan was Ben’s original producer name, its taken from an 80s US TV show…it’s only ever been one “project” (I hate that word!)

>As a fairly new artist, what is your perspective on the state of music – the industry, the hype factor and what it has produced?
EJ: We’re all doomed.

> I saw La Roux last month at All Points West and was really pleased by the crowd reception. I was in the center of a huge dance party, mud and all! How did you hold up through the weather, what was your experience at the festival like?
EJ: SO MUCH RAIN!! The gig was great, the rest of the day was fucking horrible!

> La Roux was also scheduled to play the Lollapalooza festival in Chicago but mysteriously disappeared from the bill. What was the reason behind the schedule change?
EJ: It’s a mystery.

> We’re excited to have you back in New York next month! As a successful artist from the UK how important is it to you to arrive in America?
EJ: Well we have to arrive in America if we’re going to play New York otherwise the stage will be a bit empty.

> Colourless Colour is one of my absolute favorite songs from the record (hoping it becomes a single!) I’m curious to hear where you were coming from in that song.
EJ: I wrote the lyrics in a dreary flat in South London. It looked like it hadn’t been cleaned for years hence the line “early nineties decor.” I wanted the music to have a 90′s vibe as well so you could say I was coming from the nineties. The decade that time forgot.

> One of my favorite parts of your personality is your honesty, which has often been misconstrued as being rude or bitchy. One of the most fascinating interviews I’ve seen was one where you openly discussed the trouble of working with remixers (Video.) Do you still stand behind that statement?
EJ: I stand behind everything I ever say. Honest.

> Have A-Trak or SebastiAn come around since?
EJ: They popped round for a cuppa only yesterday actually.

> Can you give our American readers a formal introduction and preview of what to expect from the US tour in 140 characters or less? (This will be Tweeted.)

I caught the NYC-area debut of sass-bomb Elly Jackson’s band La Roux earlier this month at All Points West. It was a muddy mess but all worth it because La Roux killed the set. Don’t miss her this time around, La Roux is definitely worth the hype!

A few weeks ago it was announced that blog darling La Roux was nominated for a Mercury Prize alongside some of the best acts of today including Bat For Lashes, Glasvegas, Friendly Fires, and Florence and the Machine. But as we’ve all seen time and time again, it’s always hard to tell whether a new ‘It’ artist is for real or nothing but hype.

By now most music fans are familiar with dancefloor killers Bulletproof or In For the Kill but up until Sunday the question still remained in my mind: Can this fiery haired singer with a matching fiery attitude carry a decent live set?

After the perfect weather we experienced on Saturday, naturally Mother Nature decided it was time to pull another joke and put the festival in jeopardy with another storm yet again.  My initial plan for Sunday was to catch La Roux, Lykke Li, Ghostland Observatory and Echo and the Bunnymen — all dependant on the official word on if the show would still go on. By 3PM it was announced that all remaining sets would go on as planned with doors at 4PM, all earlier sets were unfortunately scrapped.

When I arrived at the Queen of the Valley tent, the crowd was already packed in for this new mystery artist called La Roux. Whether they were familiar or not, the overall reception from start to finish was impressively positive, not one pair of arms remained crossed during the set. My previous reluctancies were put to rest by La Roux’s strong vocal delivery and high-energy stage presence…it was really infectious.

The highlights from La Roux’s 50 minute setlist included Tigerlily, Colourless Colour, Fascination, and the closing crowd favorite Bulletproof. It’s unfortunate that so many people missed out on this prematurely strong performance by one of the internet’s most buzzed about artists but I feel very fortunate to have been one of the faces in the mud-covered crowd in a state of bliss.

I almost let all of the speculation, negativity and rain prevent me from making it out to the last day of All Points West on Sunday. The festival gates didn’t open until 4PM when the sun peaked out which unfortunately meant bands scheduled before this time were skipped.

The main draws of the remaining gigs for me were La Roux, Lykke Li (always a great show) and Echo and the Bunnymen who I unfortunately decided against trekking through the mud/madness for.  Coldplay and MGMT were not on my agenda.

I got to Liberty State Park just in time to catch La Roux and stayed in the Queen of the Valley tent for Lykke Li and Ghostland Observatory before heading back to home sweet Brooklyn.

I’m really glad I decided to be a trooper and close out the weekend on the final day of the 2nd Annual All Points West Festival in New Jersey. As a whole I was VERY pleased with the organization, amenities, sound, art installations and of course fantastic acts. Great job APW, you can pat yourself on the back for a job well done. Here’s to next year!
