By the look and sound of it, the Miike Snow boys have another triumphant album in their hands which will take them any and everywhere, starting with the spring tour dates below. Lykke’s latest album Wounded Rhymes (one of my favorites of 2011) is an unlikely fusion of melancholy and the joy of basking in those emotions, but her live show is a thing of pure joy. Last night’s setlist was almost identical to her last string of New York shows (two sold out gigs at Webster Hall), save for the constraints of an outdoor venue and a few surprises that included a cover of Burt Bacharach‘s Please Stay and a piano solo for Possibility. It was yet another flawless set from Lykke Li that apparently brought out fellow Swede, True Blood‘s Alexander Skarsgård to the yard.

Lykke Li will return to the area on November 17th to play the Wellmont Theater in Monclair, NJ, bringing along the adorable Swedish folk duo First Aid Kit.

Lykke Li – Love Out Of Lust by LykkeLi

Amidst a stormy New York City week (leading up to the Apocalypse on Saturday so they say) Swedish pop goddess Lykke Li graced the stage at Webster Hall for two sold out consecutive gigs.  Lykke Li‘s dramatic entrance on Wednesday night was forecasted with pulsating strobe lights,  strategically placed drapes that billowed and twisted in the smoke-filled air and her instrumental track Come Near. Hidden behind a black veil, Lykke breezed through Jerome but dropped the veil for her signature song I’m Good, I’m Gone.

Onstage and in person Lykke Li is stunning, elusive and confident, yet fragile.  In the song Sadness is a Blessing Lykke celebrates melancholy, singing the lyrics  “I ranted, I pleaded, I beg him not to go. For sorrow the only lover I’ve ever known”, her eyes filled entirely with tears during the performance. It was both beautiful and sad, which may be the perfect way to describe her work. The emotional journey continued with my favorite moments, a lulled version of I Know Places (in which she played the keys), a live version of her duet with Kleerup Until We Bleed and the goosebump-inducing Love out of Lust. After 10PM a cloaked Lykke Li hopped onto the round stage for a 17-song set that included an exquisite cover of The Big Pink’s Velvet, a dance mashup of Breaking it Up and The Knife’s Silent Shout, and of course some new tracks, most notably the incredible psychedelic track Rich Kid Blues (below) before disappearing into the night with Unrequited Love. Lykke Li returns next May for two shows at Webster Hall, which you will no doubt see me at, gazing in awe.

I have been to the desert and back, I almost got hit by a bus in London, I tried surfing in Bordeira, I ate bad sushi in Berlin, I got drunk in Paris, I got severe blisters on my feet both in Lisbon and Madrid. I swam naked in the Swedish archipelago, I lost my voice in Gothenburg, I ate risotto in Milan, I fell off my bike in Stockholm. A psychic told me I will grow very old, a man told me I looked like Heidi Fleiss, my brother is in love, my sister is in New York, my drummer told me I’m bad of appreciating moments of grandness.

I am also hard at work in the studio.
