It’s finally here, M.I.A.‘s first official single/video since 2010′s XXO (MAYA deserved more commercial singles IMO). Bad Girls was directed by Romain Gavras who did the unforgettably controversial Born Free video, and he does not disappoint this time around. “It was dope to  have so many people from so many different backgrounds speaking so many different languages come together to create something that we believed in,” says M.I.A about the video. “I thought I was gonna die on the shoot when I saw the drifting.  It was a four day shoot so everyone was on edge the whole time specifically ME when I had to do bluesteel singing to the camera while the cars did doughnuts on the wet road ten feet away. In my mind I was thinking how I was gonna deliver the video to Vice with no legs.”

Her fourth studio album, recorded across the world with different collaborators, is due for release on Mercury Records in summer 2012. M.I.A.’s next single, “Bad Girls” taken from her Vicki Leekx mixtape, premiered on January 30, 2012, will be released globally the following day and a music video directed by Gavras for the song is set to be released on 3 February, 2012.

AND, don’t forget that her song with Madonna and Nicki Minaj Give Me All Your Luvin’ premieres on Thursday, February 2nd during American Idol, just days before the Superbowl performance! Update: M.I.A. confirmed her appearance to the press on Zane Lowe’s show tonight, along with the following:

“Yes, I’m going to the Super Bowl… I’m gonna be performing with Madonna and Nicki Minaj… If you’re gonna go to the Super Bowl, you might as well go with America’s biggest female icons.”

During the interview, MIA also spoke about her next solo album, saying that she is working on it with “European producers” and that she wants it to be released in the summer. “I want it to be a summer thing”, she said, “because it’s a summer record.”

‘Bad Girls’ is the first track to be taken from the singer’s as yet untitled fourth album. It is MIA’s first album for new label Mercury Records after she left XL Recordings at the completion of her contract. MIA’s fourth album, which is the follow-up to her 2010 record ‘Maya’, is rumoured to feature contributions from Swizz Beatz, Cataracs and Chris Brown.

M.I.A. has kept good on her word and will debut the Danja-produced track Bad Girls on Monday, January 30th at 2:30PM EST via Pitchfork. Romain Gavras once again takes directing duties for the video which will premiere via VICE’s Noisey YouTube channel on Friday, February 3rd.

The release of this new song will come just days before her performance with Madonna and Nicki Minaj on Superbowl Sunday, I do wonder if this means that Maya will have be performing it during the show. Below is a track from M.I.A.’s stellar mixtape Vicki Leekx (download) of the same name, no word on how similiar if at all the new song will be. Either way I am eager to see M.I.A. back from hiatus! Last night worlds collided when Madonna and M.I.A. (two of my favorite pop stars) appeared on primetime television for the 20/20 interview heard around the world. Madonna sat down with Cynthia McFadden for a very frank interview discussing everything from her upcoming film W.E., her Superbowl halftime performance in February (of which both M.I.A. and Nicki Minaj will appear), her pun-tastic upcoming album titled M.D.N.A. and of course taking a jab at Lady Gaga. Amazing!

Also during the interview, we got to hear a clip of a second reported duet with my girl Maya in addition to Gimme All Your Luvin with Nicki Minaj, titled Happy Birthday. Cannot wait!  Below is a picture of Nicki and M.I.A. that was tweeted out in December on the set of the music video for Gimme All Your Luvin and clips of last night’s interview.

Promoters advised ticketholders to return later for doors, but unfortunately I missed most of Rye Rye’s set due to the vague information. Following a DJ set by Asma the venue lights dimmed and the opening notes of The Message redirected everyone’s attention to the stage where M.I.A. and her posse of burka-clad backup singers kicked off the set.

At the start of her show Maya wore an awesome sloppy trench coat with a military hat over a T-Shirt that said “Fuck Google, Ask Me!,”  focusing her attention on interacting with the audience. She disrobed to a YouTube-inspired getup a few songs into her set before diving into the crowd and performing an awesome stripped down version of It Takes a Muscle.

Although I had fun at both Creators Project and HARD, last night’s show was a proper performance and return to form with great sound and a much more positive stage presence (even through all of the unforeseen obstacles.) What’s an M.I.A. show without a little bit of drama?? M.I.A. plays a free show at Brooklyn Bowl on October 6th to make up for the stormed out HARD gig.
