New Feist Music Video “The Bad In Each Other” + 2012 US Tour Dates

This past Sunday I spent the afternoon pleasantly revisiting Feist‘s 2011 album Metals [see: Best Albums of 2011] as well as her 1999 debut Monarch (Lay Your Jewelled Head Down). In my opinion, both albums have somehow been overlooked, do yourself a favor and snatch those up if haven’t already [purchase: Metals and Monarch].

Feist also announced the May 5th gig at Radio City Music Hall last week in addition to her 2 slots at Coachella~~. These are her only scheduled US tour dates at the moment so get your credit cards ready when~~ tickets go on sale this Saturday, February 5th. Last November I was lucky enough to catch Feist’s first stop on the Metals Tour at BAM Opera House, and it was truly a magical night.

BJÖRK BRINGS BIOPHILIA LIVE SHOW AND EDUCATION SERIES TO NEW YORK IN PARTNERSHIP WITH THE CREATORS PROJECT AND NEW YORK HALL OF SCIENCE ONLY CONFIRMED U.S. PERFORMANCES OF WHAT WALL ST. JOURNAL CALLS A “MAGICAL EVENING” WILL TAKE PLACE AT NEW YORK HALL OF SCIENCE AND ROSELAND BALLROOM.

In partnership with The Creators Project and the New York Hall of Science, Björk is set to bring her live Biophilia show to New York City for a special 10-night residency. Six performances will take place at the New York Hall of Science, (http://www.nysci.org/) New York City’s only hands-on science and technology museum (located just across the Grand Central Parkway from Arthur Ashe Stadium and Citi Field in Flushing Meadows, Corona Park). There will also be four performances in the round at Roseland Ballroom (www.livenation.com) located at 239 West 52nd Street.

ZJ will play the Knitting Factory in Brooklyn on October 18th and Le Poisson Rouge on October 19th, both stellar venues to catch her enthralling live set.

Ke$ha Got $leazy at Jones Beach Theatre + Video

When I asked my 14-year-old niece who she would like to see live for her first concert, she said Ke$ha without hesitation. As one of my favorite guilty pleasures, I happily obliged. On August 20th we drove out to Long Island to see the show at the Nikon Theatre, cautiously tripping over piles of beer bottles, french fries and underage drunk kids in the parking lot. There were a few more “cover your eyes/ears” moments during LMFAO’s opening set and Ke$ha’s self-proclaimed Get $leazy Tour (including a penis costume), but it was a perfect introduction to live music. My first concert was TLC’s FanMail Tour (with opening act Destiny’s Child) in 1999 in Albany, New York. What was yours?

Featured Film: OUR IDIOT BROTHER Starring Paul Rudd, Zooey Deschanel, Emily Mortimer and Elizabeth Banks

I am a sucker for the “black sheep of the family” breed of films, Our Idiot Brother being a perfect example. Paul Rudd stars as Ned, a naive idealist who lacks the common sense needed to get his life together. After serving jail time for selling marijuana to a uniformed police officer at an organic farmer’s market, Ned must start his life over as a couch-surfing single man dumped by his girlfriend Janet (Kathryn Hahn – ANCHORMAN). Ned’s sisters Liz (Emily Mortimer – LARS AND THE REAL GIRL), Miranda (Elizabeth Banks – THE 40 YEAR OLD VIRGIN) and Natalie (Zooey Deschanel – 500 DAYS OF SUMMER) each take him in before he manages to overstay his welcome and unintentionally wreck havoc on their lives. And that is where the drama unfolds.

I really enjoyed Our Idiot Brother, a pleasantly engaging comedy with some strong performances, heartfelt moments and memorable laughs. Don’t be an idiot and sit this one out.

Aaliyah, Still One In a Million 10 Years Later + BET Tribute and MTV Diary

Today marks the 10th Anniversary of Aaliyah‘s tragic passing. It’s hard to believe that so much time has passed already, especially since she remains an important and untouchable musical figure to this day. Aaliyah’s albums One in a Million and Aaliyah are a frequent presence and sound fresher and more interesting than 90% of today’s music. Aaliyah was far ahead of her time and truly lives on through her music.

BET will be airing a 10th Anniversary Tribute tonight at 8PM EST. I’ve also shared Aaliyah’s MTV Diary below (so heartbreaking). New York City will pay tribute at Tammany Hall with a 10th Anniversary Memorial with White Ring, Mykki Blanco and Venus X. East Village Radio’s Hannah Rad will also be airing a special 10th Anniversary broadcast tonight beginning at 8PM EST. Rest in Peace Baby Girl, you will never be forgotten.

The Shuffle: LL Cool J – Back Seat (Of My Jeep)

I often find myself en route to work with my iPod on shuffle, uncovering songs I haven’t heard in years (or ever). This morning LL Cool J‘s 1993 single Back Seat (Of My Jeep) from his fifth album 14 Shots to the Dome made it’s way onto my commute. The song which peaked at Number 42 on the Billboard Hot 100 samples The Detroit Emeralds You’re Getting a Little Too Smart and prompted Monica‘s 1995 hit debut single Don’t Take It Personal (Just One Of Dem Days). New Lemonade Track: The Place Where You Belong (Shai Cover)

Lemonade shared a brand new track via their Tumblr this morning, a cover of early 90′s R&B group Shai. Check out the song below along with the original and a few words from Lemonade’s Callan Clandenin. Lemonade play NYC next at Brooklyn Fireproof on August 28th as a part of the Out In The Streets Festival.

“I always loved Shai because unlike the Boyz or some of the other groups it felt like they weren’t just wailing in agony but also reaching higher, like they were transcending through their broken hearts. Featured Film: DRIVE Starring Ryan Gosling and Carey Mulligan

After enduring what was Ryan Gosling’s worst film choice ever Crazy Stupid Love just week’s prior, the early screening of his upcoming film Drive helped wipe that blip out of my memory entirely. In the upcoming action drama film Drive, Nicolas Winding Refn (Bronson, Valhalla Rising) directs Gosling as the unnamed lead in this screen adaptation of James Sallis’s 2005 novel of the same name.

Gosling stars alongside Carey Mulligan (Never Let Me Go), Ron Perlman (Hellboy), Bryan Cranston (Breaking Bad, Little Miss Sunshine) and Christina Hendricks (Mad Men) in this gritty tale of a Hollywood stunt driver trying to make things right after a heist goes awry. The film successfully fuses stylish cinematography, shocking violence, a sprinkle of romance and a retro vibe driven by Cliff Martinez’s score to tell this intriguing genre-bender.

Sidenote: Last fall Ryan Gosling puzzled fellow writers at a press junket I attended for Blue Valentine by wearing leather driving gloves. It totally makes sense now in retrospect. Check out that feature for At The Angelika Film Blog here.

MoMA PS1 Warm Up with oOoOO, Clams Casino, Black Dice, His Name is Alive and More!

I had one of the best Saturdays of this dreary summer at MoMA PS1 Warm Up in Long Island City last weekend. The line-up was jam packed with sets from Ayshay, oOoOO, Clams Casino, Black Dice, His Name is Alive, Water Borders and DJ interludes from Robin Carolan, Brandon Stosuy and John Galkin of Tri Angle Records.

oOoOO’s (surprisingly early) live set featured vocals from Butterclock and set the tone for the Apocalyptic Beach installation courtesy of Thunder Horse. However the most epic moments came from Lil’ B producer Clams Casino‘s iPad DJ set of original material, Jon Galkin‘s drop of Aly-Us Follow Me which got the crowd going hard and Black Dice‘s closing foggy set.
